This time in the Consumer Technology section of Ganbara Eva Rodríguez (Xataka) tells us all the news from Google.

If a few weeks ago it was a day of celebration for Apple lovers, today is the day for Android fans because the company behind everything has made the presentation of the year, with new phones, smartwatches and operating system. Yes, I’m talking about Google and I can already tell you two things: the big G makes very good phones, they are made to last and to be high-end, they have the most competitive prices.

Google Pixel 8 Pro

We start with the main course, Google’s new flagship, the Android benchmark with the permission of Samsung and of course, as I already mentioned, the cheapest high-end mobile phone you are going to find.

Google has not complicated itself in the design section, or in other words, the Pixel 8 Pro has a fairly continuous aesthetic section, but with some small changes that improve its ergonomics.

When seen from the front, the OLED panel stands out, reaching 6.7 inches, larger than that of its little brother and with a high resolution of 2992 x 1344 pixels, an integrated fingerprint reader and a refresh rate to match. 120 hertz for a super smooth experience.

The ‘brain’ of the new Pixels is the Tensor G3 that Google releases with these phones. Despite being far from the highest range of Qualcomm or Apple, it will perform well enough because there is a reality: more powerful phones are made every time, but today you can use a high-end phone from a couple of years ago and still being fast Or what is the same, unless you like to have the latest of the latest, there is no need for anything else. The icing on the cake is 12GB of RAM and 128 and 256 GB of storage, a promising combination.

But the real highlight of the Pixels are the cameras. To begin with, the main 50 megapixel sensor stands out, which seems similar to that of the last generation. It is accompanied by two more cameras: an ultra wide angle that goes from 12 to 48 megapixels, one of the highest resolutions in this type of sensor that also works as a macro. And on the other hand, the telephoto camera, which will allow us to make an optical zoom of up to 5x, and maintains the high resolution of the wide angle.

However, what Google does best is processing, or in other words, Google’s magic so that the photos and videos we take look good right off the bat. Google is a reference in AI and this is evident in its aces up its sleeve, where functions such as Best Take stand out, which allows you to change the faces of a photograph using predefined modes, or Magic Editor, which has improved and now allows you to change the sky and even the position of the people photographed. It promises viguerías, but we’ll have to try it.

Good battery so as not to fall short throughout the day with 5,050 mAh, with fast charging at 25W which is nothing to write home about but it is noticeable and wireless charging.

As for the price, good news and bad news. The bad news is that following the inflationary trend, it has risen 200 euros compared to the previous generation, a real outrage. The not so bad thing is that the Google Pixel 8 Pro costs 1,099 euros and yes, it is not cheap, but if we think about the 1,409 euros of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or the 1,469 euros of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, it doesn’t seem like that much.

An extra that is worth taking into account is that it promises 7 years of updates, much longer than the phone lasts, but a guarantee that it will always be protected and will not become obsolete.

Pixel 8

Google Pixel 8

But if you allow me, I can tell you that one of the phones that I recommend the most in the coming months is its little brother, the Google Pixel 8, simply because the differences are rather few in practice.

Aesthetically, they are practically two drops of water, that is, a conservative ergonomic design with an elegant glass back. The big difference is that the Pixel 8 is smaller and lighter, integrating in this case a 6.2-inch OLED panel that, like the previous one, has a 120 Hz refresh rate and a slightly lower resolution due to its smaller size. but in any case, a very high quality screen.

By the way, without being a small mobile phone because nowadays it is a miracle to find it, if you are looking for something discreet, it is a good candidate.

In terms of hardware, it shares storage and processor, the Google Tensor G3, but it remains at 8GB of RAM, which I can already tell you is more than enough for a good user experience. It also has a slightly smaller battery but is still more than solvent even for demanding users.

Where there is a more notable difference is in the camera, but in short it has the main thing and where it cuts back is in the detail. Thus, it has the same 50-megapixel main camera and is accompanied by a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens (remember that in the previous one it was 48 and also had a telephoto lens for long-distance photography). We lose these things, but we will have some of the best cameras on the market. And as before, the magic of Google, smart deletion and editing for great results without much effort.

As before, it also comes with the new Android 14 and seven years of updates, the most that Android offers and also more than Apple’s iOS.

Will there have been an increase in this case? Well, also, but less notable: “only” 50 euros. That is to say, starting at 799 euros, it is a real candy within a high range where it is normal to exceed a thousand euros.

Google Pixel Watch 2

Google has also renewed its watch with this Google Pixel Watch 2, bringing improvements in design and more advanced functions, but not much. Thus, this generation has a completely aluminum case that makes it lighter and its crown is now larger and more stylized.

It also implements a new low-consumption chip with autonomy that is still low: 24 hours, charging the watch every day. The good thing is that it has fast charging and in half an hour we can charge 50%.

In terms of sensors, it has the latest heart rate measurement with AI to gain precision, an electrodermal activity sensor to record stress and a third temperature sensor, which helps with sleep and health metrics. It also repeats fall detection and improves its emergency functions, so that for example you can pass on what you are doing to someone, ideal for older people who we want to keep under control.

Like everything above, the Google Pixel Watch 2 will go on sale on October 12 at a RRP of 399 euros and the news here is that it will go on sale in Spain, something that did not happen with Google’s first smart watch.

Android 14

And we end with what affects all of us who have an Android phone: we have a new operating system and it will first reach Google phones, but we will have to wait a few weeks and even months to see it available on our phones, as long as they are relatively new.

What’s new in Android 14? Well, some of the most notable are the possibility of seeing the battery cycles to know how the deterioration of this component evolves, the way of taking a step back will be changed to make it more intuitive, it will have a more refined interface, the The lock will have new shortcuts to make it more agile, it will be possible to clone applications, new flash notifications, we can use the mobile camera as a webcam for the computer, among others.

But above all, let’s stick with that more refined aspect, the battery degradation and the way it goes back, because we are going to notice all of that.
