An investigation of the Lund University (Sweden) suggests that breast cancer detection with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a safe alternative to traditional screening, because it identifies more cases of cancer and is more efficient.

The trial has determined that breast cancer detection with Artificial Intelligence identifies 20% more cancers and reduces the workload of radiologists in more than 40%according to Health Europe and the BBC.

In this way, they point out that taking advantage of AI in mammography could help reduce waiting times of millions of breast cancer patients around the world and improve outcomes.

Only in Swedenaround one million women are called in for a mammogram each year, and each exam is reviewed by two breast radiologists to ensure a highly sensitive “double reading.”

However, due to the shortage of radiologists breast cancer, increasing delays can put patients at risk. Because of this, experts are exploring breast cancer detection with AI.

In the trial, 80,033 women were randomized into two groups: 40,003 women in the intervention group who underwent breast cancer screening with AI and 40,030 in the control group who received standard double reading without AI support.
